Help Save Medicaid!
Medicaid is a federal-state partnership program that provides health benefits to certain low-income Americans, including children, their parents, pregnant women, the elderly and people with disabilities.
Over the course of the year, some 51 million people who would otherwise not have access to regular health care rely on Medicaid.
Medicaid Budget Cuts Have Started
Last year’s stimulus package increased the federal share of Medicaid money… temporarily. But this money ran out at the end of June 2011, and the federal government has gone back to paying half the costs rather than 60 to 70 percent. With the slow recovery of the economy (and potential “Double Dip”), many will be looking to make even more drastic cuts.
These cuts will be made to:
- Private Hospitals
- Home-based Care Providers
- Community-based care providers
- Doctors and Specialty Service Providers
And these cuts will do more than just harm to Medicaid recipients – there will be staff cuts, business closures, and higher costs to taxpayers.
One way to mitigate the need for additional state spending cuts and protect the economy would be for the federal government to reduce state budget gaps by extending enhanced Medicaid funds over the period that states are expected to experience budget problems rather than cutting enhanced funding off in June 2011.
